Orange Beach is a coastal city in southern Alabama, located along the Gulf of Mexico between Gulf Shores and Perdido Key. It is known for wide sandy beaches, coastal dunes, inland bays, and waterways that support boating and fishing. The city extends along a narrow barrier-island setting, with residential areas, restaurants, marinas, and recreation facilities close to the water. Cotton Bayou, Terry Cove, and Wolf Bay provide access to calmer inland waters, while the Gulf shoreline offers a different coastal environment. Orange Beach is also part of Alabama's Gulf Coast community, where tourism, fishing, and marine recreation play major roles.

The area around Orange Beach has long been associated with Native American peoples and later with fishing, farming, and maritime activity along Alabama's coast. The city's modern identity is closely connected to the Gulf and the waterways surrounding the barrier island. Nearby historic sites help explain the area's strategic importance, particularly Fort Morgan across Mobile Bay and the preserved communities of the broader Gulf Coast. Local traditions continue to center on seafood, boating, fishing, and outdoor recreation. The Orange Beach Indian & Sea Museum also preserves local history through exhibits focused on Native American artifacts and the area's fishing heritage.

Orange Beach offers access to several distinct coastal environments. Gulf State Park extends along the nearby shoreline and protects beaches, dunes, freshwater lakes, and maritime habitat, with trails and recreation areas available to visitors. Perdido Pass connects the Gulf with back-bay waters and is a popular area for fishing and observing boats. The Backcountry Trail system follows wetlands, maritime forest, and other coastal habitats, while Alabama Point East provides access to beaches and views of the pass. Offshore waters support dolphin sightings, fishing excursions, and boating, while coastal habitats provide shelter for shorebirds and other wildlife.

Seafood is a defining part of Orange Beach's food culture, with Gulf shrimp, oysters, crab, and locally caught fish featured at restaurants throughout the city. Traditional Gulf Coast dishes include fried seafood, gumbo, grilled fish, and po'boys, often served alongside regional sides. Fishing remains an important part of the local economy and recreational life, with charter boats departing from marinas around the city. A distinctive feature of Orange Beach is its combination of Gulf beaches and sheltered bay waters within a relatively compact area. These connected waterways create opportunities for sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and wildlife viewing.
