Carcross is a small community in Yukon’s Southern Lakes region, located at the narrow passage between Bennett Lake and Nares Lake. Its setting combines sandy dunes, forested mountains, and glacier-fed lakes, with the community lying along the South Klondike Highway between Whitehorse and Skagway. Carcross is within the Traditional Territory of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation and remains closely connected to the surrounding land and waterways. The community is particularly known for the Carcross Desert, a rare landscape of sand dunes, and for its location near Bennett Lake and Montana Mountain.

Carcross has deep cultural roots for the Tagish and Tlingit peoples, who used the area as a place for fishing, hunting, gathering, trade, and travel. The name Carcross developed from “Caribou Crossing,” referring to woodland caribou that once moved through the area. The community later became an important transportation stop during the Klondike Gold Rush, with the White Pass & Yukon Route railway connecting it to Skagway and Whitehorse. Today, the Carcross/Tagish First Nation’s Haa Shagóon Hídi Learning Centre and carving programs provide opportunities to learn about local history, art, and cultural traditions.

The Carcross Desert is one of the community’s most unusual natural features, with pale sand dunes formed from glacial lake sediments and shaped by wind. Bennett Lake provides sandy beaches and clear water beneath the surrounding mountains, while Nares Lake sits immediately beside the community. Montana Mountain is known for an extensive network of mountain biking and hiking trails, including routes developed through the Single Track to Success program involving local Indigenous youth. Historic attractions include the White Pass & Yukon Route railway station, Matthew Watson General Store, Caribou Hotel, and the preserved remains of the S.S. Tutshi.

Carcross has a small but distinctive food and artisan scene centered around Carcross Commons, where locally made crafts, artwork, coffee, baked goods, and other foods are available. Traditional skills such as carving and beading are particularly visible in local cultural spaces and workshops. The surrounding lakes also support fishing for species including lake trout, whitefish, and northern pike. One lesser-known feature of the community is the importance of its narrows, which historically served as a major seasonal gathering place for Indigenous peoples. Carcross therefore remains closely linked to the waterways and mountain routes that have shaped life in the region.

Located in the western part of the Yukon Territory Province of Canada, this area is on the Yukon River and famous as the gold mining area of the great Gold Rush. It is still an active mining area and also a popular tourist attraction as it has retained much of the look from the gold rush era.
